Tom Hansen believes he cannot be truly happy until he finds "The One." That person is his boss's new assistant, Summer Finn (Deschanel). Tom falls head over heels, but Summer is upfront: she doesn't believe in true love or relationships. The film jumps back and forth across the 500 days they know each other, contrasting Tom's romantic expectations with the messy reality of dating someone who isn't on the same page.
