of the 1960s and 70s. It mocks the suburban ennui of couples who turn to sexual experimentation to escape their mundane, mass-produced lives in standardized housing blocks. Humor and Irony

Central to the thematic architecture of Gelukkige Paren is the archetype of the Heeresma protagonist: typically a middle-aged, intellectual, yet emotionally stunted male. These narrators are often observers of their own lives, capable of analyzing their relationships with cynical detachment but unable to change them. They are paralyzed by a sense of "gemakzucht" (laziness or inertia) and a fear of confrontation. heere heeresma gelukkige paren pdf

The setting of "sleeper cities"—empty streets and identical flats—serves as a backdrop for the characters' lack of true vitality. 4. Literary Significance of the 1960s and 70s

| Aspect | Details | |--------|----------| | | Heere Heeresma (1932‑2011), a Dutch writer known for his gritty, semi‑autobiographical style and a fascination with marginal characters. | | First Publication | 1972, by De Arbeiderspers . | | Genre | Social realism / modernist novel; mixes satire, melancholy, and dark humor. | | Plot (in a nutshell) | The narrative follows a young couple trying to navigate post‑war Dutch society, confronting economic hardship, marital tension, and the search for personal authenticity. Their “happiness” is portrayed as a fragile, often ironic construct—hence the title, Gelukkige Paren (“Happy Couples”). | | Key Themes | - Alienation in modern life – the couple feels disconnected from both the consumerist boom and traditional family expectations. - Masculinity & femininity – Heeresma explores how gender roles constrain personal freedom. - The illusion of happiness – the title itself is a critique of the idealized “happy couple” trope. | | Stylistic Notes | Heeresma’s prose is terse, sometimes fragmented, with occasional stream‑of‑consciousness passages. He mixes colloquial Dutch with literary allusions, creating a voice that feels both intimate and observational. | | Reception | Mixed at release: praised for its daring realism, but some critics found the bleakness off‑putting. It’s now regarded as a cult classic within Dutch post‑war literature. | | Influence | Inspired later Dutch writers like Arnon Grunberg and Renate Dorrestein who also dissected domestic life under social pressure. | These narrators are often observers of their own

For many years, Gelukkige Paren was not available as a legitimate e-book. However, Dutch publishers have been slowly digitizing back catalogs. It is worth checking major platforms like Bol.com, Libris, or the publisher’s website before resorting to a bootleg PDF.

    Hi !

very interesting reading all over your website.
I’m struggling here by wanting to install SoX on a Mac under 10.8.5 .
Gettin’ to cd sox-14.4.2 all works ok but then it says for “./configure” : “-bash: ./configure: No such file or directory”
(I did install XCode). Have you any hints to solve this ? Thank you, Raphael

I’ve found my false path: I did download a binary as a .zip file thinking it’s the same content as the tar.gz as they show up with the exact same file size on http://sourceforge.net/projects/sox/ . Now it’s working.
